The Cart & Horse Inn - one year on and two awards

Back in 2014, David Ward Director at specialist commercial mortgage broker Christie Finance, helped secure funding for Lindsay and Stuart Blaney to purchase the freehold of the then called The Cart & Horse Inn in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

Lindsay and Stuart are both experienced pub operators who saw the potential that the business had, having run it for two years under a lease agreement from Marston’s. That was until the brewer decided to dispose of the property and withdraw investment. This adversely affected the great work they had done and the plans they had for the business, so they decided to leave the business and seek another opportunity.

Whilst searching for over a year for another business they were always keen on owning The Cart & House Inn and when the asking price reduced they were quick to place an offer for the freehold.

Introduced to Christie Finance by Christie & Co, who handled the sale of the business, David assisted in arranging competitive leading terms for the acquisition plus additional funds to rejuvenate the 300 year old property. Completing in December 2014, Lindsey and Stuart soon got to work putting their plans into action increasing the range of local ales & ciders, plus introducing a food offering.

These initiatives soon increased trade levels and their hard work was duly recognised with their first Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Award for Best Pub Serving Mild. Following this award they changed the name of the pub to ‘The Scruffy Dog’ and wrapped up a great 2015 by winning their second CAMRA Award for Pub of The Season. They are currently looking at extending the pub to deal with extra customer numbers.

David commented, “It’s been great hearing the progress that Lindsay and Stuart have made in such a short-time since buying the business. At Christie Finance we pride ourselves on helping first time buyers find the right funding to help achieve their business dreams and always keep in touch, even after the transaction has completed to offer any further assistance.”
