Former coaching inn in Welsh Border town sold to first time buyer

The freehold interest in the Ewe and Lamb, a former coaching inn in the Herefordshire market town of Kington, in the Welsh Borders, has been sold on behalf of Admiral Taverns Ltd to John Wilkins from Slough, as his first freehouse purchase.

The Bristol office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co, handled the sale while funding for the purchase was secured by their associate company, Christie Finance, the independent mortgage brokers.

The Ewe and Lamb is a Grade II Listed, three-storey property at 12 High Street which dates back to the 18th Century and briefly comprises a main bar to seat 40 within dining area, four-bedroom owner’s accommodation on the upper floors and a courtyard garden to the rear.

The freehouse has a central location, ideal for attracting local residents and visitors to this historic ‘black and white’ market town.  Situated within The Marches and surrounded by beautiful scenery, Kington is renowned as a centre for walking as the ancient Offa’s Dyke path terminates in the town.

Evan Morgan of Christie Finance comments: “The new owner of the Ewe and Lamb, John Wilkins, has long been familiar with the area.  He spotted the inn for sale on Christie + Co’s website and felt it offered the perfect opportunity to fulfil his ambition of owning his own freehouse. I was delighted to assist Mr Wilkins with his financial requirements for the purchase.  Some creative thinking was required as we neared completion, but our strong banking relationships prevented any difficulties.”

Nicholas Calfe of Christie + Co comments: “The Ewe and Lamb was offered for sale as part of the ongoing disposal of over 50 surplus units on behalf on behalf of the national pub operator, Admiral Taverns Ltd.  We are delighted to have negotiated the sale of the freehold to John Wilkins as his first venture into the licensed trade and wish him every success with the business.”

The Ewe and Lamb was sold for an undisclosed figure after Christie + Co sought £130,000 was sought for the freehold interest.
