A chef acquires a Suffolk freehouse, with assistance from Christie Finance

Christie Finance, the independent mortgage broker, has assisted an experienced chef, Robert Caddy, to acquire his first freehouse; the Railway Tavern on the edge of the Common in the Suffolk village of Mellis, just three miles from the market town of Eye.

The Railway Tavern was built in 1840 to serve passengers arriving at Mellis station, an important stop on the Ipswich to Norwich mainline, which closed in the 1960s.  Today the freehouse attracts a regular trade from the local community as well as passing trade and walkers enjoying Mellis Common, a conservation area in the care of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

The Railway Tavern is renowned for its real ales and good quality food and offers bed and breakfast accommodation in three en suite bedrooms and function facilities.  The property also comprises four-bedroom owner’s accommodation and a private walled garden.

Nicholas Baker, mortgage broker for Christie Finance, comments: “We were delighted to secure the necessary finance to enable Mr Caddy to purchase the freehold interest in the Railway Tavern from its owners, Ruth and Denny Newman, who had owned and run the business for seven years.

A chef by profession, Mr Caddy will serve good quality food at realistic prices and has many new ideas for the Railway Tavern.  In addition to developing the food trade, he intends to carry out a refurbishment, introduce theme nights, quiz nights and live entertainment, increase the opening hours for the pub and restaurant and promote the letting accommodation, conference and function facilities.   With his enthusiasm and experience in the hospitality trade, we are confident that Mr Caddy has what it takes to transform the Railway Tavern into a quality food-led freehouse.”
