New owners for a North Shropshire village freehouse

The Dickin Arms, a character freehouse in the village of Loppington, near Shrewsbury, North Shropshire, has been sold to local publicans as their first freehold business through the Birmingham office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co, with the funding sourced through their associate company, independent mortgage brokers, Christie Finance.

New owners Phil and Norma Kelly previously ran the Horse & Jockey in Northwood from December 2003, turning the business around into one of the most successful pubs in the area.  As the Horse & Jockey was a leasehold pub, and Phil and Norma were keen to buy their own freehold freehouse, they purchased the Dickin Arms in the spring of this year from retiring owner Roger Downward.

Loppington is a small village set in the Shropshire countryside, some three miles west of Wem and within easy reach of the market towns of Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Whitchurch and Wrexham.

The only pub in the village, the 300-year-old Dickin Arms is a traditional inn standing close to the church and offering good food and real ales. As its name suggests, the Dickin Arms was originally part of the estate of the Dickin family of Loppington House.   The detached property briefly comprises two bars, a 36-cover restaurant, four-bedroom owner’s accommodation, beer garden and car park. Under the previous owner some 70% of trade was derived from beer sales.

By arranging 75% funding and a bridging facility we made it possible for the Kellys to realise their dream of purchasing a freehold property following three successful years at a local pub which they had on a leasehold basis.  By using our market knowledge and contacts within the banks, we were able to secure the perfect deal for them.”

The freehold interest in the Dickin Arms was sold for an undisclosed figure.
